Empowered Partners Workshop in Berkeley: How to Support Your Partner Through Birth

Empowered Partners Workshop in Berkeley: How to Support Your Partner Through Birth

Most partners want to help during labor and just don't know how. The Empowered Partners workshop at Millie is built to change that. It's a comprehensive, interactive class that gives partners real, practical tools for supporting their loved one through late pregnancy, labor, and the early postpartum weeks, not vague encouragement, but actual techniques they can use in the moment. The class is designed for both the pregnant person and their partner to attend together.

If you're planning to take a childbirth prep class too, Millie recommends completing that one first. The comfort measures workshop builds well on that foundation.

What the workshop covers

The class walks through three stages:

Pregnancy. How to support a partner in the final stretch, from easing physical discomforts to helping them prepare emotionally for birth.

Labor. Hands-on comfort techniques, including massage, counterpressure, breathwork, and grounding touch, plus guidance on how to stay connected and advocate for your partner throughout the birth.

Postpartum. What physical and emotional recovery actually looks like in the early weeks, and how to show up with care, encouragement, and steady presence.

By the end, partners walk away with a clearer sense of how to offer support in late pregnancy, hands-on tools like massage and counterpressure to ease labor, an understanding of what advocacy can look like in a birth setting, ways to support recovery and bonding after the baby arrives, and a better sense of how to tune into their partner's needs and respond with care.

Why partner support matters

Presence is powerful. Often the most helpful thing a partner can offer isn't a solution, it's calm, closeness, and steadiness. Touch, breath, and movement can genuinely bring relief and help labor progress, and emotional support builds the kind of trust that helps a birthing person feel safe throughout pregnancy, labor, and recovery. Partners don't need the perfect words. Attention and care go a long way on their own.

The workshop also covers supporting yourself as a partner. Staying fed, hydrated, and rested helps you show up more fully. Breathing with your partner, not just for them, keeps you both grounded. And taking breaks when you need them isn't a failure to show up, it's part of how you stay present for the long haul.

Real techniques, not just theory

A lot of the workshop is hands-on practice, including:

  • The roving touch sequence, a full-body awareness technique where a partner moves their hands slowly from head to shoulders to arms and down the body, helping the birthing person breathe into each point of contact and release tension.
  • Slow dancing, a simple standing embrace and gentle swaying motion that promotes rhythm, encourages the baby to descend, and builds emotional closeness during labor.
  • Counterpressure and the double hip squeeze, two touch techniques that ease back pressure and help create a sense of containment and focus during contractions.
  • Breathing patterns for each stage of labor, including flower breath for early labor, 4-7-8 breath for active labor, and J-breath for pushing, each one designed to regulate the nervous system and support the birthing person through that specific stage.

Understanding the fear-tension-pain cycle

One of the more useful frameworks in the workshop is the fear-tension-pain cycle: fear leads to tension, which intensifies pain and can slow labor down. It's often triggered by feeling watched, rushed, or unsafe. Partners learn to help break that cycle through what the workshop calls the three Rs: rhythm (a repeating movement, breath, or sound), relaxation (a soft jaw, dim lighting, rest between contractions), and ritual (familiar patterns like the same breath, word, or touch). Together, these create the safety and flow that let labor unfold more smoothly.

Supporting the space, not just the person

Partners also learn how much the environment itself matters. Labor hormones respond to how safe and supported a birthing person feels: oxytocin helps labor flow, while adrenaline, triggered by fear or feeling exposed, can disrupt it. That means part of a partner's job is protecting the space itself, dimming the lights, keeping voices low, managing interruptions, and simply asking what would help their partner feel safe and calm.

Carrying it into postpartum

The workshop doesn't stop at birth. Partners learn what the fourth trimester actually looks like physically, emotionally, hormonally, and logistically, and how to help without trying to fix everything. Practical support looks like making meals, handling visitors, and protecting rest time. It also covers bonding, since support isn't only about caring for a partner, it's also about connecting with the baby directly through skin-to-skin contact, learning the baby's cues, and finding your own way to soothe.
