Tamara J Nelson

Tamara has been attending births for 20+years, first as a doula, then as a community midwife apprentice, and for the past 5 years as a hospital-based certified nurse midwife (CNM). Tamara is excited to join the Millie team & to be a part of bringing an innovative, holistic, and equitable approach to sexual and reproductive healthcare. Tamara completed her training in nurse midwifery at The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she earned her Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN), later becoming a board certified CNM and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP). She is a researcher as well as a clinician which stemmed from her undergraduate work at UC Santa Cruz in Community Studies with a focus on Public Health where she focused her reseach on Maternal Mortality and how racism factored heavily into where health care disparities fell. While studying at UCSF, Tamara had the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the top researchers in the fields of reproductive justice, epidemiology, public health, and midwifery theory. Knowing the why and how we got to where we are in a failing healthcare system fuels her focused approach to midwifery. She is steadfast in being trauma-informed and present in her bedside manner while remaining evidence-based and equitable in her clinical decision-making. Her passion as a midwife lies in building trusting relationships with her patients so they feel safe, seen, and supported in their individual health goals.
